Why testing is a good entry point into IT

Every digital product, from a banking app to an online shop, needs someone who checks that it works the way its requirements say it should. That person is a software tester. It is one of the few IT roles you can start learning without a programming background, which is why many career changers look at it first.

The difficulty is rarely motivation. It is the scattered information. Articles explain terms but not how to use them, video tutorials show a tool but not the daily routine of a tester, and job adverts list a dozen programs you have never opened. Many beginners study for weeks and still cannot say what they would actually do on their first day.

This programme puts the pieces in the right order. You start with the foundations of testing and how web products communicate, then move on to hands-on work with bug trackers, API tools, logs and databases. In the final part you turn what you have learned into a CV, a confident self-presentation and practice interviews.

You do not need any previous experience in IT. You need steady time for study and a willingness to do the practical tasks, because the skills in this course are built by doing.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain what software testing is and why it matters

You will understand the role of a tester in a team and in the development process.

  • Write test documentation

Create checklists and test cases that another person can follow without questions.

  • Analyse requirements for gaps

Read a requirement critically and spot what is missing or contradictory.

  • Apply test design techniques

Choose test data and scenarios systematically instead of guessing.

  • Report bugs clearly

Write bug reports in a tracker so developers can reproduce and fix the issue.

  • Test the front end with browser developer tools

Inspect pages, requests and responses to find problems on the client side.

  • Test the back end with Postman and Swagger

Send API requests, read status codes and check responses in JSON and XML.

  • Query a database with SQL

Retrieve and verify data to confirm that the system stores what it should.

  • Present yourself at an interview

Prepare a CV, a self-presentation and answers to typical technical and personal questions.

Learn by testing, not only by reading

Theory is the starting point, but the heart of the programme is practice. Each new topic is followed by tasks that mirror what testers do at work: finding defects, documenting them, checking how a service talks to its server and confirming the data behind the screen.

Along the way you work with tools such as Jira, Confluence, Zephyr, Postman, Swagger, browser DevTools, Kibana, Charles Proxy and SQL clients. By the end they are familiar working environments rather than names on a job advert.

  • Test cases and checklists in a test management tool
  • API checks and log analysis

How the course works

The programme is delivered online on a learning platform that works in a browser on any device, so you can study when it suits you. Lessons and sessions are recorded, and you can return to them whenever you need to revisit a topic. The suggested pace is about three months, but you decide how quickly you move.

Expect a regular rhythm. Where live sessions are part of your plan, they last around two to two and a half hours a week and are recorded, so a missed session is not a lost one. Alongside them, plan roughly 6 to 12 hours a week for reading, practice and homework. Homework is designed to consolidate each topic, and the practical tasks make up the bulk of the more than 70 hours of practice in the programme.

The last part of the course focuses on the hiring process. You work on a CV, prepare a self-presentation and rehearse typical interview questions, and the programme closes with a final practice interview that checks your knowledge across all the modules.

The programme

Six modules take you from the basics of testing to a prepared job search.

  1. 1Module 1 — Foundations of testing theoryThe vocabulary and documents every tester works with.
    • What software testing is about
    • Test documentation and its特点 in practice
    • Requirements: which kinds exist and where they come from
    • Types of testing
    • Test design techniques
  2. 2Module 2 — Networks and web basicsHow a client and a server talk to each other.
    • Client-server architecture
    • REST and SOAP compared
    • Working with JSON and XML
    • Request methods
    • Status codes, cache and cookies
  3. 3Module 3 — Practice: tasks, requirements and test casesThe daily documentation work of a tester.
    • Practising with tasks and bug reports in Jira
    • Working with requirements in Confluence
    • Writing test cases and checklists in Zephyr
  4. 4Module 4 — Practice: front end, back end and dataHands-on checking of what happens behind the screen.
    • Testing the front end with browser DevTools
    • Testing the back end with Postman and Swagger
    • Tracking logs in Kibana
    • Replacing data with Charles Proxy
    • Practising SQL queries
  5. 5Module 5 — Deeper theory of testing and networksA second pass over the foundations, with more depth.

Is this course for you?

This course is for you if…

  • You have never worked in IT and want to learn a new profession from the beginning.
  • You want a role that can offer flexible ways of organising your working time.
  • You have started learning testing alone and want a clear, structured sequence.
  • You want help preparing a CV, a self-presentation and answers for interviews.

Probably not a fit if…

  • You are looking for a course on mobile testing, which this programme does not cover.
  • You want to learn test automation or programming; the course focuses on manual testing.
  • You expect results without regular study time and practice.
  • You want a guaranteed job or a guaranteed salary; the course teaches skills and preparation, not outcomes.

After the course

When you finish, you will understand how a typical web product is built and tested, and you will be able to talk about it in the language teams use. You will know how to read a requirement, design checks, write test cases and report a defect so that it can be reproduced.

You will also have used the tools that appear most often in tester job adverts, from a bug tracker and API clients to log viewers and SQL. That practical experience gives you concrete examples to talk about, which makes interviews far less intimidating.

Finally, you will have a prepared CV, a rehearsed self-presentation and practice interview experience behind you. What you do next is your decision: apply for junior roles, keep deepening a specific area, or build on this foundation with further study.

Questions before you buy

How much time do I need each week?

Live or recorded sessions run about two to two and a half hours a week. In addition, plan around 6 to 12 hours a week for practice and homework. You can adjust your pace because the materials stay available.

Do I need any experience or prior knowledge?

No. The programme is designed for people with no background in software testing or IT. All the necessary theory and practice is included, starting from the basics.

How does access work after payment?

After payment you receive access to the learning platform and can begin straight away. Everything is available online in your browser.

What is the refund policy?

You can request a refund within 14 days of purchase if the course is not what you expected.

What format are the lessons in?

The programme combines recorded video sessions and lessons, practical tasks, homework and supporting materials. All of it is available online on any device.

Will the materials stay available?

Yes. Once you have access, you can return to the lessons and materials whenever you need to refresh a topic.

Can I really learn the profession in three months?

Three months is a realistic pace to cover the essential minimum: the theory, the main tools and the preparation for interviews. Your own pace depends on how much time you can dedicate each week.

Does the course cover mobile testing?

No. The programme concentrates on the minimum needed to start in testing. The fundamentals you learn also apply to mobile products, but mobile testing is not taught separately.

Does the course guarantee a job?

No. The course gives you skills, practice and interview preparation. Your results depend on the time you invest and on the job market.
