Why so many knitting patterns fail the moment you change the yarn

Most knitting instructions are written stitch by stitch for one specific yarn at one specific tension. They work well if you buy exactly the same skein and knit exactly the same way. The moment you choose a different yarn, or need a different size, the numbers stop making sense and the project quietly goes wrong.

Many knitters have been there: a lovely jumper that turns out too tight across the shoulders, or a scarf that is much narrower than the picture. Often the problem is not your hands. It is that the instructions never explained where the numbers came from, so you had no way to change them.

This course takes a different approach. Instead of asking you to follow a list of stitches blindly, the lessons show you how a garment is built: how the measurements turn into stitches and rows, how the shaping follows the body, and how the yarn changes the result. Once you see the logic, a pattern stops being a rigid set of orders and becomes a plan you can adjust.

The lessons are calm, thorough and unhurried. They are made for people who want to slow down, knit something warm for themselves or the people they love, and enjoy the process along the way.

What you will be able to do

Skills you build across the programme.

  • Measure and read a gauge swatch

Know how many stitches and rows your yarn gives you in ten centimetres.

  • Convert body measurements into stitch counts

Work out the numbers for the size you need, not only the size in the sample.

  • Substitute yarn with confidence

Choose a different yarn and recalculate the project instead of searching for the original.

  • Knit a two-colour scarf with even tension

Keep both strands tidy and the fabric flat.

  • Shape a jumper from a soft, light yarn

Handle mohair, shoulders, armholes and sleeves with a clear plan.

  • Build a dress with a collar

Plan the silhouette, shape the bodice and add a neat collar.

  • Use calculation sheets as a working tool

Fill in your own numbers and keep notes for the next project.

  • Choose your next project sensibly

Use the level notes on each lesson to pick something that suits your skills.

The method: learn the process, not just the instructions

Every project in the programme is taught in two layers. The first layer is what you see on screen: close-up shots of the hands, clear demonstrations of each technique and a steady pace that lets you knit along. The second layer is the reasoning behind it: why a certain number of stitches is cast on, why the shaping starts where it does and how a small change in tension alters the final size.

This second layer is what lets you adapt. When you understand how a garment is calculated, you can work with the yarn in your cupboard, knit for a different size or change the length without fear. The sample calculations in the PDF files show the arithmetic step by step, so you can replace the sample numbers with your own.

Close-up filming, chapters with time codes and no advertising in the middle of lessons keep the focus where it belongs: on your needles and your yarn.

How the course works

The programme is self-paced. After payment you get access to the video lessons and the accompanying PDF files, and you decide when and how fast to work through them. There are no deadlines and no live sessions you need to attend. Many learners watch a chapter, knit for an evening and return the next day.

Each video is divided into chapters with time codes, which work like the contents of a book. If you want to revisit only the neckline or the sleeve join, you can open the list of chapters in the player and jump straight there. The player remembers where you stopped, and the lessons play well on a phone, a tablet or a computer.

Videos are for watching online and cannot be downloaded, but the PDF calculation samples can be downloaded and printed, so you can write notes in the margins while you knit. The level of difficulty is marked in each lesson description, which helps you choose a starting point.

The programme

Six modules, from the logic of calculation to complete garments.

  1. 1Module 1 — The logic of calculationThe foundation that makes every other project adaptable.
    • Why instructions tied to one yarn let you down
    • Knitting and measuring a gauge swatch
    • Turning body measurements into stitches and rows
    • Adjusting a project to a different size
  2. 2Module 2 — A two-colour scarfA first complete project that teaches tension and colour control.
    • Choosing yarns and colour combinations
    • Casting on and setting up the pattern
    • Keeping both strands even in the fabric
    • Finishing the edges and blocking the scarf
  3. 3Module 3 — A mohair jumperA light, airy garment and how to control a delicate yarn.
    • Working with mohair: needles, tension and habits
    • Calculating the body and the sleeves
    • Shaping the armholes and shoulders
    • Knitting and joining the sleeves
    • Neckline, finishing and care
  4. 4Module 4 — A dress with a collarPlanning a longer garment from silhouette to collar.
    • Planning the silhouette and length
    • Calculating the skirt and the waist
    • Shaping the bodice
    • Knitting and attaching the collar
    • Assembly and final fit
  5. 5Module 5 — Working with calculation samplesUsing the PDF files as your own planning tool.
    • Reading a sample calculation step by step
    • Replacing the sample numbers with your own
    • Keeping project notes for next time
  6. 6Module 6 — Choosing your next projectFinding your way around a growing library of lessons.
    • Reading the level notes in lesson descriptions
    • Planning a project that matches your skills
    • Pieces for women, men and children: what changes in the calculation

Is this course for you?

This course is for you if…

  • You are new to knitting and want clear explanations rather than a bare list of stitches
  • You have knitted for years but still struggle to adapt patterns to your size
  • You want to use the yarn you love, not the exact yarn from the sample
  • You like learning at your own pace in the evenings or at weekends
  • You want to knit warm things for yourself, your children or grandchildren

Probably not a fit if…

  • You want a quick pattern to copy without understanding it
  • You are looking for live classes or one-to-one tutoring
  • You expect to download the video files to keep offline
  • You prefer crochet or machine knitting, which the lessons do not cover

After the course

Once you have worked through the lessons, a pattern no longer looks like a locked box. You can take a swatch, measure it and work out how many stitches your own garment needs. If your favourite yarn is not quite the same as the sample, you know how to recalculate rather than give up.

You will also have finished or well-started pieces: a scarf with neat two-colour work, a light jumper, a dress with a collar. More importantly, you will know how to approach the next one, how to read its level, how to adapt it and how to keep notes for the following time.

Many people also find that knitting becomes a calmer part of their week. A cup of tea, a lesson on the screen and the needles in your hands are a good way to slow down and make something warm for someone.

Questions before you buy

I am a beginner. Will these lessons suit me?

Yes. The level of difficulty is stated in each lesson description, and the programme includes both basic projects and more advanced techniques. Start with the foundation module and the scarf, then move on to garments.

How much time do I need per week?

It is up to you. The course is self-paced with no deadlines. Many learners spend a few evenings a week watching a chapter and knitting along; the time spent mostly depends on how fast you knit.

What do I need before I start?

No special knowledge is required. You will need knitting needles, yarn you like and a measuring tape. The lessons explain how to choose the rest.

I cannot find the same yarn as in the lessons. Can I still knit the project?

Yes. The lessons are not tied to a specific yarn or tension. Each one comes with a PDF calculation sample, so you can adapt the project to the yarn and size you prefer.

How do I get access after payment?

Access is instant. As soon as the payment is confirmed, you receive an email with a link to the lessons, and everything also appears in your personal account.

How long does access last, and does the material stay available?

You pay once and the lessons stay in your account permanently, so you can come back after a month or after a year.

What format are the lessons in?

HD video lessons with close-ups and time-coded chapters, plus PDF files with sample calculations. The videos play in the browser on a computer, tablet or phone.

Can I download the videos?

Video files cannot be downloaded, to protect the authors' rights, but you can watch them at any time from any device. The PDF files can be downloaded and printed.

What is your refund policy?

You can request a refund within 14 days of purchase. If the course is not what you expected, contact us within that period and we will return your payment.
